Wonderful Rothenberg ob der Tauber Germany is a centuries-old, fairy-tale town located in Bavaria, Germany. It’s known for its well-preserved medieval town and wall. It’s along the Romantic Road in Southern Germany and is a must for anyone visiting the country.
When to visit
We visited in late September, and there were still buses of tourists wandering the town during the day. The weather was chilly but great for walking around and exploring. If you go during the spring and summer, expect tourist traffic to be much greater and longer lines. Don’t miss the ghost tour in the evening. You meet the night watchman in the village square, and he’s a wealth of history and information as he leads you with his candlelit lantern.
There are several great sites to see, from the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum, where you can see all of the ways residents were dealt with during the centuries, to the Christmas Museum and store. These two sites alone will take 3 to 4 hours or more to tour. And make sure you walk to the top of the wall around the city. It gives you a great view of the town, and you’ll see how the wall was constructed, including the tiles on the roof.
This is also a great town to shop for those must-have souvenirs. Many of the stores will pack and ship the items for you, which may be worth it, so you don’t have to worry about packing it for the trip home.
We found a lot of great places to eat. If you know where you want to have dinner, we found it best to reserve a day or two in advance. Many of the restaurants book full early. You can always stop and have a beer or drink while you wait for your reservation. We didn’t find many places to have a nightcap before returning to our hotel, but that was fine. After a big meal, we were ready to retire for the night.
