If you have the opportunity to explore Venice, Italy make sure you take the time to walk the many side streets and canals. You never know what hidden gems you’ll find. Below are a few photos I like from our last trip to this amazing city of old buildings, canal streets, and wonderful Venetian people. We’ve been fortunate to visit Venice a few times through the years. We tried something different this visit. We wandered off, got lost, and found amazing new sites. Walking along we admired the old buildings, greeted Venetians as they went about their day, and enjoyed the cool weather. Pleasantly surprised we found little shops, restaurants, and Churches we hadn’t experienced before.

Explore the Streets of Venice and find less-touristy sites

Venice is one of my favorite cities in Italy. The food is delicious and different than in Tuscany or Southern Italy. If you need help with directions, the people are friendly and helpful. There are so many sites, buildings, streets, and restaurants that you could spend a lifetime here and find something new and wonderful.

Here are a few of those hidden gems you’ll find when you explore the streets of Venice, Italy.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta, known as I Gesuiti, is a must-see in a quiet part of Venice not far from the Fondamenta Nuove. Green and white marble adorn the interior of this magnificent building which began construction in 1715 and finished in 1729. A Church dating to 1148 occupied this space. After demolition, the construction of Santa Maria Assunta began.

We then enjoyed the colors of the city, such as blue boats in front of coral-colored brick walls, chipped and worn from previous centuries. Take time to enjoy these special sites and take it all in as you stroll the streets away from the tourists, hustle and bustle.

We found our way back to St. Mark’s Square at sunset. We enjoyed the quiet of the Square. The mass of tourists during the day had left to go back to their hotels, cruise ships or took the train out of the city. If you haven’t seen St. Mark’s Basilica, you’re in for a real, life-changing experience.

Oh, and if you want a great place to stay not too far from the train station, check out Hotel Palazzo Abadessa. Visit the Web site at http://www.abadessa.com. The rooms are gorgeous and very reasonable. It was hard to find the first time, but after you find it you won’t stay anywhere else.
