We left the town of Montalcino, mapping our way to our next stop when we saw the sign for The Abbey of Sant’Antimo in Tuscany. We decided to take a detour before continuing on our way. As we drove along the gravel to the parking spaces, we really didn’t know if it was open or if it was okay to wander the grounds. We decided to walk around and look at the beautiful building and surrounding scenery. The doors were open, and we decided to step into the building. It was amazing!

Built in the 11th and 12th centuries

The Abbey is approximately 10km from Montalcino, Italy, and dates between the 11th and 12th centuries. Part of the original structure is still visible today. In the 1870s, the monastery was restored and, in 1992, became an active monastery once again.

We were fortunate as we arrived around 14:45 or 2:45 pm and were standing in the back of the Abbey when the chanting began. At certain times during the day, the Benedictine monks of Sant’Antimo begin their chanting, which lasts about 12 minutes. It is the most peaceful 12 minutes you’ll experience. Well worth timing your visit to hear the amazing sounds echo through the Abbey.

We toured the Abbey and the grounds for a while. My wife especially liked the tall Italian cypress that stands at the front of the Abbey. My favorite thing about the interior was how the sunlight came streaming through the windows as we stood before the crucifix at the altar. You can see it in the photo I took above.

The day was quickly winding down, and we had to get on our way. However, we will go back again someday. If you plan to go, make sure to visit the Web site and do a little research first. You can find the Web site here: www.antimo.it

You can hold special spiritual retreats, weddings, and more at the Abbey. They also sell products in the pharmacy, such as honey, herbal teas, sweets, and more.

Enjoy!
