Here’s a refreshing summer brandy drink I’ve been experimenting with lately when friends come over on a Saturday evening. I think I’ve hit on the perfect cocktail that everyone loves on a hot summer night. The only caution is that it’s so good and a bit strong that the alcohol may sneak up on you. Enjoy experimenting with other flavors and combinations of this brandy drink and share the results in this passion.
What is Brandy?
Brandy was first distilled in France in the early 1300s. Doctors used it as a medicine and called it “the water of life” for its amazing strengthening and sanitary powers.
Brandy is basically distilled wine and is typically made from grapes, but makers can also use fruits, such as blackberry, apricot, peach, apple, strawberry, and more. Often brandy is aged in barrels after the distilling process.
Here’s what to do:
I usually use a stemless wine glass for this drink, but you could use other glasses as well. Start by putting a few fresh blackberries in the bottom of the glass and mash it using a muddler (a large wooden tool used by bartenders). Or you could use the end of a wooden spoon in a pinch.
Next, add 5 or 6 ice cubes, an ounce of blackberry brandy, and then top it all off with Asti Spumante or sparkling wine. I tried using prosecco, and it’s just not the same as Asti Spumante. I use prosecco for many other mixed drinks.
Stir and enjoy with friends and family or kick back by yourself and let the cares of the week disappear.
