This is probably one of the most striking bleeding hearts that I’ve grown. ‘Gold Heart’ has been growing happily in my garden for more than five years and keeps coming back stronger than ever. The dainty pink flowers nod on red stems in late spring. And if that wasn’t enough, the bright gold to chartreuse foliage is eye-popping when you spot it in my garden. I do need to keep it well-watered during the growing season or it will tend to go dormant. But don’t worry it will be back again next year adding to the spring show.

Here’s some of the key information if you’re interested in adding this spring bloomer to your garden border:

PERENNIAL: Old-fashioned bleeding heart, Lamprocapnos spectabilis (formerly Dicentra spectabilis) ‘Gold Heart’
SIZE: 24 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide
BLOOMS: Pink and white in late spring to early summer
FOLIAGE: Bright gold to chartreuse leaves with red stems
ZONES: Cold-hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9
LIGHT: Prefers part to full shade, however, it should not be in sun during the afternoon as the leaves may burn
SOIL: Prefers moist, well-drained
PESTS: So far the deer and rabbits have left it alone
