It was a warm spring day. We had some flooding so the ground was soggy, but the scent in the air was that of a great spring afternoon.

It was my first time hunting turkey, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had read about it and Bradley had been often. We set up our blind on a small berm in the woods not far from the river. We both had shotguns, stools, turkey calls, and some deer sticks and jerky for the long wait. Bradley placed three decoys about 30 to 40 yards out in the clearing and we hunkered down to wait.

We were in the blind for probably 3 to 4 hours calling, watching, and barely moving. But our wait was worth it when we heard the distant gobble of the turkeys as they were cautiously working their way in our direction. There were about 6 or 7 weaving back and forth, finding food as they came closer. They were on our left so we had to reposition a little. We pointed out the two that were the best targets and when they got close enough, to our shots and they went down.

It was a great first hunt and more importantly, I got to do it with my son at my side!
