850 Years of History
My wife, brother, and sister-in-law and I traveled to Germany for 10 wonderful days in September and October. The scenery was amazing, the food delicious, and the beer cold! One stop we made was to the Burg Eltz. Eltz Castle is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, Germany.
We parked in the lot on the hill and chose to walk the forest path to the castle instead of taking the bus to the entrance. It’s about a 20 to 30-minute walk, and you probably want decent shoes to wear. At the end of September, the forest was gorgeous, and the smell of fall was in the air. We thought we would never get there and then you ’round the last corner on the path and there in front of you is the castle, Burg Eltz.
Burg Eltz sits in a valley on a little pinnacle, which is probably why it has survived 850 years and the many wars in this area. It’s a bit hidden from view. Begun in the 9th century, it’s still in the Eltz family to this day. The owners restored the castle between 2009 to 2012. Burg Eltz was divided into three homes, and you can tour 11 or 12 of the dozens of rooms. It’s a walkthrough of weaponry, living quarters, and you end the tour in the kitchen. You can’t take pictures inside, so take it all in and put it to memory for years to come.
I have a few photos from the outside and the courtyard inside the walls. Enjoy.
