It was another great Sunday morning pheasant hunt , even though we didn’t bring any home. It was a warm Sunday, there was still corn in the field, and Macie was great sniffing out the birds. She would run in front of us about twenty yards, darting back and forth. You could tell when she would lock on to a scent and follow it through the corn and tall grass. We actually saw some this year. In past years the population has been deficient in Iowa, and you could go all season without seeing many roosters. Maybe it’s finally turning around now.
We both said we would much rather have snow on the ground, a little cold, and great cover and food for the birds. The pheasants are easier to track, and they sit tight better when it’s a little colder.
I mostly enjoy walking and talking with my son Bradley. Having a bird pop up just feet in front of you is a thrill that is like none other. A sunny morning, spending time with family, a great bird-dog, and exercise. That’s another great Sunday morning pheasant hunt.
