Enjoy the drive from Miami to Key West

We decided to relax in Key West Florida and spend our anniversary at the Casa Marina Resort in Key West. We loved every minute of our trip. Never having been to southern Florida, we decided to fly into Miami, rent a car and drive to Key West, stopping at little towns and sites along the way. We weren’t on any time schedule so we could take our time and enjoy the view as we made our way to our resort. Some friends told us to take Card Sound Road and stop at Alabama Jack’s which is a great place on the water to have some wonderful food and drink. One thing you’ll find out — it’s hard to predict how long it’s going to take to get to your destination. Island time is very relaxed. As you drive, stop and enjoy the shops, sits, and restaurants along the way.

More than 4 hours later, we arrived at our resort, the Casa Marina Resort — A Waldorf Astoria Resort. The place is absolutely fantastic and the people are extremely helpful and friendly. Two pools, comfortable rooms, and a private beach to sit and read a book, people watch, or take a nap.

What to do as you relax in Key West Florida

We spent some time wandering the streets, meeting people, and stopping for drinks and snacks throughout the day. Almost everything is within walking distance, however, there are cabs to take you, if walking is going to be difficult or it’s just too warm. Key West is a port for many cruise ships. Large groups of people wander the streets, take over the restaurants, and bars before heading back to the ship. Also, the nightlife is not quiet or reserved. People while they are in Key West love to have a good time and show it in the many bars along the main street. It’s easy to get caught up in the fun, but I was also glad to make it back to our resort.

One day, while exploring and trying to find a place to eat, we happened upon a couple that had just moved to Key West from the Midwest. They were kind enough to point us in the direction of an authentic Cuban restaurant. The restaurant was off the main street in a neighborhood. The food was amazing!

I would suggest taking a catamaran sunset cruise while in Key West (photo 2). The hotel concierge helped us line up the cruise the evening before we were supposed to travel home. There were drinks, appetizers and the people sailing the boat were helpful in explaining the history of Key West, places to visit, and where not to go.

We had a wonderful stay at an amazing resort. The food, especially the conch fritters, the people and just relaxing on the beach celebrating our anniversary was time worth spent in the special place. I’d love to see your pictures, find out your favorite food, restaurant, bar, place to stay, and sites to see.
