An ancient city in Tuscany
Pitigliano Italy rising from rock and stretching skyward. It sits above a hilltop of volcanic tuff within the province of Grosseto in the southern tip of Tuscany, Italy. The ancient city dates back to prehistoric times during the copper age, the Etruscan era around 500 BC to 3rd century AD, and the Romans’ time. Archeologists have found artifacts in the caves and ancient tombs dug into the walls. Vinyard owners store wine from the region in the caves.
Dating back to the 15th century, Pitigliano, also known as ‘Little Jerusalem,’ has been home to a large Jewish community and is home to a Synagogue that has been carefully renovated. Be sure to visit the Synagogue as you explore the narrow streets of this city.
Wander the cobblestone streets
As you wander the cobblestone streets and narrow passages, you’ll find cathedrals, a church, the Orsini Palace, the town’s original walls and gates, and the remains of a tall and very visible aqueduct at the very top of the butte. There are shops and artist galleries scattered throughout the town. My wife and I stopped in and visited with one of the artists and purchased a piece of pottery, It’s a great way to meet the locals and take home a memory of this wonderful place. Be sure to stop and walk the cemetery and see the beauty even there.
There are plenty of places to stop for lunch or espresso. Just outside the wall and the entrance to the town is a great restaurant. Enjoy a pizza, pasta, or a bowl of soup, and a glass of wine. Then head out to find your next hidden Tuscan hilltop town to explore.
